This includes, “…We actively promote health and safety with policies and practical programmes that help individuals safeguard themselves and their colleagues. As employees, we put safety first by creating a work environment to protect the health and safety of others and ourselves. …”. We strive to comply with applicable regulations which include preventing excessive working hours.
    Our strategic framework, approach, and related targets, are endorsed by the board and institutionalised reporting structures ensure board oversight of progress.

    The group has a philosophy of ‘zero injuries or harm’ to employees. Business units operate under a strict divisional risk management audit protocol incorporating health and safety.
    Human capital, including health and safety, considerations form part of the group’s due diligence process, predominantly through the assessment of employment and labour practices for investment opportunities.

    Occupational health and safety (OHS) standards are covered by prevailing legislation.

    OHS is the direct responsibility of divisional Chief Executive Officers (CEOs). Formal health and safety committees with management and worker representatives cover all South African staff and the majority of staff in all other operations. Regional laws cover staff in our operations.

    In addition to quarterly SHE reports, detailed health and safety reporting, including risk assessments, are reviewed on a bi-annual basis by the Risk and Sustainability Committee, a sub-committee of the board.
    Operations are encouraged to start all meetings with a safety message (or “safety moment’).

  • 403-1: Workers representation in formal joint management worker health and safety committees

    The reporting organization shall report the following information:
    a. The level at which each formal joint management-worker health and safety committee typically operates within the organization.
    b. Percentage of workers whose work, or workplace, is controlled by the organization, that are represented by formal joint management-worker health and safety committees.

    Effectively 100% of employees are covered by health and safety committees on which both management and employees are represented.

    Barloworld believes that it is every employee's right to work in a healthy and safe environment. To this end, health and safety committees are established across the group. Management consults with the committees with a view to initiate, develop, promote, maintain and review measures to ensure the health and safety of all employees and visitors.

    OHS is the direct responsibility of divisional CEOs, and formal health and safety committees comprising management and worker representatives cover all South African staff.

    Regional laws apply to staff in UK and Russia all being covered.

  • 403-2: Types of injury and rates of injury, occupational diseases, lost days, and absenteeism, and number of work-related fatalities

    The reporting organization shall report the following information:
    a. Types of injury, injury rate (IR), occupational disease rate (ODR), lost day rate (LDR), absentee rate (AR), and work-related fatalities, for all employees, with a breakdown by:
    i. region;
    ii. gender.
    b. Types of injury, injury rate (IR), and work-related fatalities, for all workers (excluding employees) whose work, or workplace, is controlled by the organization, with a breakdown by:
    i. region;
    ii. gender.
    c. The system of rules applied in recording and reporting accident statistics.
    Integrated Report:

    Unfortunately there were two work-related fatalities reported in the financial period.

    One fatality occurred in our Equipment Russia operation and the other in our Automotive operation. We extend our sincere condolences to the bereaved families. We have extended our support – including counselling and financial – to the families who lost their loved ones. We continue with our focus and emphasis on health and safety at work. Both fatalities were related to male permanent employees.

    We continue to roll-out safety training initiatives that aim to eliminate work-related fatalities and entrench a safety culture.

    The group uses Lost-time injury frequency rate as the material indicator of safety performance. This enables trends to be observed and performance benchmarked against industry norms and peers. The group operates across a number of industries and geographies with different risk profiles and legal requirements.

    In reporting its safety statistics, including LTIFR, the various divisions and operations report appropriately for their circumstances, including the nature of their operations and working environments. A LTIFR approach document detailing each divisions approach to safety reporting is available on the Barloworld website.

    For comparability and consistency purposes, the major business units' LTIFRs are reported separately and also on a consolidated basis.

    This approach to LTIFR reporting is reviewed on an ongoing basis to ensure it remains relevant, informative and aligned to the respective business activities, appropriately reflects the risks and impacts for the group, its divisions and operations globally.

    Majority of injuries reported during the financial period were sustained by male employees. Most injuries occur during the service and maintenance of plant, equipment and machinery. Majority of our service technicians are male with a small but increasing percentage of female technicians emerging.

    Medical treatment and first aid cases are reported internally in certain divisions. The group is considering extending this reporting to other divisions. Recordable-injuries which are lost-time injuries (180) and the number of work-related fatalities (2) was 182 for the financial period.

    Group 2020 safety targets in place include lost-time injury frequency rate (≤ 0.5) and work-related fatalities (Zero).

    No new cases of occupational disease (noise induced hearing loss) reported within the financial period.

    All health and safety incidence and accidents, including work-related fatalities are thoroughly investigated and appropriate preventative measures are implemented and communicated. Monitoring and reporting includes SHE and detailed health and safety reports which are tabled at divisional and group risk and sustainability committees.

    Absenteeism included:

    • Sick leave 161 717 days
    • Industrial action 1 162days.
  • 403-3: Workers with high incidence or high risk of diseases related to their occupation

    The reporting organization shall report the following information:
    a. Whether there are workers whose work, or workplace, is controlled by the organization, involved in occupational activities who have a high incidence or high risk of specific diseases.
    Integrated Report:

    Given the nature of the group’s activities, there are no categories of employees nor occupational activities that pose a relatively higher risk or higher incidence of disease.

    A number of employee wellness and support programmes are in place, including medical aid schemes and assistance programmes. These programme also contribute towards the mitigation and control of risks related to HIV/Aids as well as other health and wellness related issues.

    HIV/Aids receives particular attention in countries with high prevalence rates. Programmes to address HIV/Aids cover education, prevention, voluntary counselling and testing (VCT) and disease management, including provision of anti-retroviral medication.

    All employees are encouraged to take the necessary precautions to prevent infection and to regularly check their status. Currently 605 employees receive HIV/Aids assistance, through medical aid, company- and state-sponsored programmes.

    Barloworld Equipment has on-site clinics in South Africa. These provide primary health care and occupational health services to employees, including confidential and anonymous counselling and assistance on any issue that could affect productivity and wellbeing. Other divisions have appropriate resources.

    Automotive's businesses in South Africa and Barloworld's Corporate division also in South Africa have independent support services which cover health and related issues as does Barloworld Equipment South Africa.

    The Logistics business has an employee 'wellness line' in place for its South African employees and their families. In addition Logistics has a driver wellness programme within its Transport business that monitors the overall health and well-being of its drivers. The corporate office in South Africa has wellness days when employees can undergo a number of health-related assessments and tests, and receive advice.

    Across the group, there are no serious communicable diseases other than HIV/Aids, which mainly affects southern African operations. A group policy ensures no discrimination and victimisation of HIV-positive employees in the workplace. The company programme consists of a number of initiatives in the following key areas:

    • Prevention: programmes include vaccinations, poster campaigns, awareness programmes, free reading materials, dispensers with free condoms at all workplaces, high-profile initiatives for World Aids Day.
    • Education: initiatives include workplace seminars for all employees on relevant topics and training for managers on managing HIV/Aids in the workplace.
    • HIV/Aids testing: a free know-your-status and voluntary testing programme is implemented at each business unit and promoted during the monthly induction programme for new employees.
    • Disease management: all employees have access to counselling, medical advice and appropriate treatment. Through the group’s support programmes offered by various service providers, employees are able to access counselling which could cover stress related concerns and management. In some instances treatment is covered by company-sponsored disease management and treatment programme, but in most cases assistance is provided through medical aid schemes. This is reviewed annually in line with national and industry developments. Family counselling is also available. The above programme is applicable in South African operations and employees received training and information on five disease lines: body mass index, hypertension, cholesterol, glucose levels and HIV/Aids.

    In Equipment southern Africa, occupational health personnel provide counselling on various communicable diseases as well as having a risk based medical surveillance programme in place. All employees have access to the Occupational Medical Practitioner and specialised treatment as required. An independent employee wellness programmes includes access to various counsellors and related professionals on a national basis.

    The table below gives an indication of the prevalence of HIV/Aids in the group's South African workforce and assists the group in assessing its risks relating to HIV/Aids. Comprehensive risk assessments are conducted in a structured manner throughout the group. An assessment of HIV/Aids is not excluded from these assessments and it would feature in the event that it is perceived as a serious risk for the entity conducting the assessment. The number of HIV/Aids positive employees represents some 5% of the group's global workforce.

    Of the South African employees tested, 785 employees (6% of those tested) are HIV positive over the three year cumulative period.

  • 403-4: Health and safety topics covered in formal agreements with trade unions

    The reporting organization shall report the following information:
    a. Whether formal agreements (either local or global) with trade unions cover health and safety.
    b. If so, the extent, as a percentage, to which various health and safety topics are covered by these agreements.

    There are no formal health and safety agreements with trade unions although this aspect may be included on the agenda of union meetings and discussions with management in the various operations. To the extent safety matters are discussed and agreed with unions during meetings, these would be regarded as formal agreements on such aspects. Businesses that operate under industry agreements with unions are covered to the extent that these issues are addressed at industry level.
